HELP!!! Pairings Coordinators Needed

This morning as I was lining up subs for my pairings assignment in August it occurred to me that we could really use some help.

We currently have four to cover eight courses, myself for WindRose, Tim for Cypresswood (two courses) and Gleannloch Pines, Bob Dahl for Houston Nat'l and Cypress Lakes, Doug for Cinco Ranch and Jersey Meadows and Chuck can fill in when he's available. While this is not a horrible workload it becomes complicated when someone is unavailable for any reason and then we sometimes find ourselves doing it several weeks in a row or multiple weeks in a month.

Chuck has developed as Excel spreadsheet called the Pairings Master that makes doing the actual pairings very easy. Below is a link to an overview video he produced that explains the spreadsheet and how it works.

The whole process is pretty simple, just a couple of posts here the week before the event urging people to sign up, the actual pairings and another post announcing the pairings for that week.

Leaderboard Update

Great day out there guys! EVERYONE IS A WINNER! We give points to first, second and third, and sinces we only had 3 teams, we all got something today. Congratulations. First today went to Peter Addison, Al Christopher, Harry Hunter and Milton Kovar (yes, that Milton!) Second place was Rod Keeling's team with Peter Tomlinson, Chuck and Mike Bruns. The leaderboard is up here. If you're interested in how the points spreadsheet looks like here are the first, second and third place finishes in the system as of July 1. Have a great fourth of July!

NEW HANDICAP SYSTEM & PROCESS

We currently use a program called Golf League Recorder GLR to manage the golf handicap for the group. We've been using GLR since at least the early 2000's. It's an old program with a lot of short comings and is vulnerable to data loss, being a stand alone program on a laptop. Because of this our Coordinator group has decided to migrate to another program that is more secure and offers more flexibility. The new Program is called Fringe Golfers (FG). FG is a free web based golf league management tool that provides scheduling, score tracking, handicap calculation and more. Data is automatically backed into the cloud and every player can establish a user ID and password to access it. It is user friendly and quite easy to manage. More importantly it is free. Players are however encouraged to donate ‘a coffee’ at will to manage the software from time to time. Cost of a coffee is $3 and this is strictly voluntary. We would encourage you to do so occasionally...your decision.

We are registered in the program as Amoco Retiree Golf Group. We have also uploaded the group’s information and our historical scores from 03 September 2024 to date. We no longer have access to historical scorecards before this date, so that is as far back as we can go. Just like GLR, FG calculates the handicap by taking the average of the best 10 games of the last 20. Where the player have less than 20 games in the system, FG takes the average of the best 50% of available games, up to a minimum of 3 games. This is however where the problem may lie. Many of us don’t have up to 20 games since 09/03/2024. Some don’t even have up to 3 games required to generate a handicap in FG. Therefore the handicap calculated on FG may be slightly different from what we currently have on GLR. The difference may be up or down for an individual. It does not follow any pattern. The difference is however not expected to be much, maybe by one or two strokes. Certainly not more than 3 strokes. As we continue to use the FG system, the handicap figures will certainly normalize. Those with less than 3 games since 9/3/2024 will continue to use the last generated handicap on GLR till a handicap is established for them on FG.

Forward Plan

You will all be getting a mail from Fringe Golf very soon. If you don’t see it by tomorrow, you may need to check in your spam mails. The mail will require you to verify your email and guide you to establish a password for the site. Your email address will be your User ID. This will give you online access to the ARGG data with your scores and handicap records. You will also be able to see the scores and handicaps of other players. We highly recommend you go ahead and log in as the system will also provide you with some very interesting stats on your games. Good fun.

The tournament of 7/1/2025 at Windrose will be the last game to use the handicaps generated by GLR. From the 7/8 Tournament at Cypresswood Tradition games and thereafter, we will be using the handicaps generated by FG. This is important because you probably will see a slight shift in handicaps using the new system.

It took a bit of effort and work to establish this new system and upload the historical scores onto it. We have a great, hard working group of coordinators; Doug, Chuck, Derryl, Milton, Jide , John Townsend and Mike Taylor. A special thanks to Jide, who conceived the plan and led the effort. Please ask any of us if you have a question or require further clarification. If this results as a temporary enhancement in your handicap figure, please don’t give us any credit for that. The same formula was used to recalculate the handicap for all.
